A breast implant exchange is a surgical procedure that removes and replaces existing breast implants, refining size, shape, profile, or material to better match your current aesthetic goals. This procedure can be performed to:
Breast implant exchange requires careful planning to preserve breast structure, maintain symmetry, and optimize long-term results. Dr. Sabine Lovell’s expertise in breast procedures ensures the meticulous approach this procedure demands to ensure a beautiful outcome.
Dr. Lovell’s approach to implant exchange prioritizes precision, aesthetics, and patient comfort, ensuring the best possible outcome.
Consultation & Customization – Every patient’s goals are unique. Dr. Lovell will evaluate your existing implants, breast tissue, and aesthetic preferences to create a tailored surgical plan. If you have information about your previous breast implants please bring this with you to your consultation.
Anesthesia & Incision Placement – The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, using your original incision sites whenever possible to minimize new scars. If you have saline implants and are only having implants removed this can be done in the office with local anesthetic.
Implant Removal & Revision – Depending on your goals, implants may be replaced, resized, repositioned, or removed altogether, with adjustments to the breast pocket or tissue as needed. Dr. Lovell will also meticulously and thoroughly address any complications—for example, removing thickened scar tissue in patients with capsular contracture.
Closure & Recovery – Sutures are placed carefully to ensure optimal healing, with swelling decreasing over the next few weeks and final results appearing within 3-6 months.
This procedure is ideal for women who want to:
Whether you desire a subtle refinement or a more dramatic change, this procedure allows for full customization.
Today’s implants offer better durability, improved shape, and a softer, more natural feel.
If you’ve experienced hardening, discomfort, implant rupture, or shifting implants, breast implant exchange can restore physical comfort and confidence.
Your body and preferences change over time—this procedure ensures your breasts remain beautifully proportioned and timelessly elegant.
You may be a candidate for breast implant exchange if you want to refresh your look, adjust your breast size, or replace aging implants. Over time, your breast shape and personal preferences may change, or you may wish to upgrade to newer implant technology, such as gummy bear implants or a different implant size or material.
If you’re experiencing issues like implant rupture, capsular contracture, or discomfort, replacing your implants can restore both comfort and confidence. Ideal candidates are in good health and have fully healed from their initial surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Sabine Lovell will assess your goals and help you determine the best approach for your needs.
Following breast implant exchange surgery, most patients return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks.
Swelling and mild discomfort are common in the first week. Light activity can resume in 7-10 days, while full exercise will need to be avoided for 4-6 weeks to ensure proper healing. Dr. Lovell prioritizes a supportive recovery phase, providing detailed aftercare instructions, remaining available for questions and concerns, and checking your healing at post-operative visits.
As post-operative swelling subsides and the breast tissues settle into place, your newly refined breast contours become visible.
Many patients experience a renewed sense of confidence and comfort, especially if they previously had discomfort, rippling, or changes in breast appearance over time. Dr. Sabine Lovell customizes each implant exchange to ensure that your new implants complement your body proportions and align with your desired look, helping you feel good in your body again.

Dr. Lovell uses existing incision sites whenever possible to minimize additional scarring. If you downsize and need a concurrent lift you might have additional scars.
Yes! Many women opt for smaller implants or implant removal, with or without a breast lift, for optimal shaping.
No! Dr. Lovell’s techniques are all drainless for your comfort and optimal healing.
A breast lift reshapes sagging tissue, while implant exchange focuses on revising the size, shape, or material of your breast implants. Sometimes you will require a breast lift at the same time as your implant exchange to give you the best outcome. Dr. Lovell will tailor the procedure to your needs and desires.
